The Backpacker

You know, this all started with one ski trip and a soggy pair of jeans. Back in 1973, our founder, Dale Mathews, came back from a snow adventure, soaked and determined to find better gear. So, he opened the first outdoor speciality shop in Baton Rouge, and just like that, The Backpacker was born.

From the beginning, we’ve been all about helping folks get outside with the right gear and real advice. Fast forward to now, and we’re still a family-run business with two Louisiana locations, one in Baton Rouge and another in Lafayette. 

What sets us apart? It’s not just the gear, it’s the way we connect. Our team actually uses the stuff we sell. We’re runners, hikers, skiers, paddlers, campers, and we’re always happy to chat trails, swap stories, or help someone new find their way into the outdoor world.
